Martinez hails Everton perfection

Everton manager Roberto Martinez basked in a "perfect" display as Everton beat Wolfsburg 2-0 to top Group H in the UEFA Europa League.
A 1-1 draw between Lille and Krasnodar earlier on Thursday ensured progression for the Premier League side, irrespective of the result at the Volkswagen Arena in Germany.

But Everton built on their progression in style, soaking up significant spells of pressure in between Belgium international due Romelu Lukaku and Kevin Mirallas netting on the counter attack.
"It was a perfect away performance," Martinez told reporters.
"Our counter-attacks were lethal and I thought we were outstanding.

"Big credit must also go to the back five because keeping a clean sheet here is a fantastic achievement."
It was a night to remember for Everton's travelling support and Martinez thanked them for their vocal backing.

"The celebrations were incredible - there were Evertonians everywhere," he said.
"We've had phenomenal support again."
The downside of the evening for Martinez was midfielder James McCarthy suffering a recurrence of a hamstring problem.

The Republic of Ireland international will be assessed over the next 24 hours and his manager is keen to find a lasting solution.

Martinez told Everton TV: "It's been a recurring problem with James' hamstring and we need to get to the bottom of it.

"He's such a high-intensity player that his soft tissue suffers a lot. He's a sprinter and we hope he didn't hurt himself too much.
"We'll assess him and see how quickly we can get him fully fit."

Benitez happy to progress

Napoli coach Rafael Benitez was simply happy to have progressed in the UEFA Europa League after a 0-0 draw at Sparta Prague.
The draw was enough to book Napoli's place in the last 32, staying top of Group I after the stalemate at the Generali Arena.

Benitez felt the draw was a fair result, and he took plenty of positives out of the encounter.
"We started well but after the first 10 minutes Sparta put us under real pressure; in the second half we improved and created chances," the Spaniard was quoted as saying by UEFA.

"I think a draw is a fair result on the balance of play. The positive news tonight is that we are through with one match to spare and we did not concede a goal."

Benitez reserved special praise for defender Raul Albiol and goalkeeper Rafael Cabral after his team's fourth clean sheet in their past five games in all competitions.

"The match wasn't at all easy, but I saw a lot of positive things," he said.
"Raul Albiol and Rafael Cabral played very well, they were really dependable and prevented Sparta from scoring in several situations."

We need to improve - Stambouli

Benjamin Stambouli acknowledged Tottenham need to improve despite qualifying for the UEFA Europa League knockout stages.
Spurs were lacklustre in a 1-0 Group C win over already-eliminated Partizan on Thursday - Stambouli scoring the game's only goal in the 49th minute.

The French midfielder's strike was his first for the club since joining from Montpellier on transfer deadline day.

And he dedicated his goal to those in the military, after admitting there was significant room for improvement for Mauricio Pochettino's side.
"It was very good to score and win," Stambouli told ITV4.

"It is only positive things for us. We play good teams who love to fight and we need to improve.
"My celebration [a salute after scoring] was for all military round the world. They fight for peace."
Tottenham were sluggish in the first half but did improve after the break, only to miss a series of chances.

Youngster Harry Winks got a chance to make his debut late in the piece though, and he dubbed it a life highlight.

The 18-year-old is quoted as saying on Tottenham's official Twitter account: "It's the best moment of my life. It's a dream come true. I loved every minute of it."
Besiktas' 2-2 draw at Asteras Tripolis sees Spurs top Group C by two points heading into matchday six.

That means that avoiding defeat in Turkey next month will be enough for Spurs to finish first in the pool.

Pele ´doing fine´, receiving kidney treatment

Brazilian football great Pele confirmed he is "doing fine" in his recovery from surgery to remove kidney stones.
The 74-year-old went under the knife on November 13 but was re-admitted to hospital on Monday after sustaining a urinary infection.

Widespread reports suggested the three-time World Cup winner was in intensive care, however it was confirmed that Pele was in an "intensive therapy unit".
"Hello everyone, I want to take this opportunity to let you know that I am doing fine," the tweets read.

"I was not put into intensive care today [Thursday], I was simply relocated to a special room within the hospital for privacy purposes only.
"While I appreciate all the visitors that came to see me, I really need to continue my treatment and recovery in peace.

"I am blessed to receive your love and support, and thank God this is nothing serious.
"I am looking forward to spending the upcoming holidays with my family, and will start the new year with renewed health, with many international trips already planned! Thank you!"

A statement from Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo read: "The patient Edson Arante do Nascimento (Pele) has shown improvement in his clinical condition and will continue to be under care in the intensive therapy unit.

"Now he is temporarily receiving kidney treatment without the need for other treatments.
"The hospital will provide another update if there is any new information."

Rodgers similar to Wenger - Toure

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is similar to Arsene Wenger, according to defender Kolo Toure.
The Northern Irish tactician has come under growing pressure after a five-match winless Liverpool run in all competitions.

But Toure, who spent several seasons under Wenger at Arsenal, backed Rodgers to get his side back into form.
"I do see Wenger in him because he's so intelligent," Toure said.

"He knows how to speak to players and how to get the best out of them. He will prove that because we will come out of this hard time.

"Like Arsene, he's always there at training trying to improve things. His style of play is also similar. He always wants us to pass the ball and keep playing which is very important."
Toure is certain Liverpool, who are 12th in the Premier League and battling in Europe, will return to form.

The 33-year-old Ivorian said Rodgers needed time, particularly in the UEFA Champions League.
"He's right up there [with the best]," Toure said.
"He's young as a manager. This is the first time he has managed in the Champions League.

"He is learning. The Champions League is tough. We've seen it with teams like City, who have found it tough. You have to learn about it.

"You need time as a manager. I think he has done a great job for this club and we like him. He works so hard and gives 100 per cent. That’s why I am sure we will get out of this spell we're in."
Liverpool host Stoke City on Saturday.

Allardyce slams ´rather silly´ Tomkins

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce questioned James Tomkins' maturity in response to the defender's play-acting against Everton.

Tomkins was widely criticised for his reaction to a push in the chest from Everton's Kevin Mirallas on Saturday, as the West Ham defender went to ground clutching his face in an attempt to get the opposition forward sent off.

In the 60th minute at Goodison Park, Tomkins initiated contact with Mirallas, pushing his opponent before the Belgian responded, which prompted the 25-year-old centre-back to fall to the ground in mock agony.

Both players received yellow cards and Allardyce was unimpressed on Thursday.
"It was rather silly what James did," he said.
"He understands that. He knows what he did was not right and ultimately he shouldn't be getting involved in the first place.

"It was not the type of reaction you want to see from your players."
Allardyce added: "It's about maturity, isn't it?
"It's about learning from your mistakes. We all make mistakes and those who become better people and better players are the ones that don't make those mistakes again and learn from it.

"So it's a big challenge to James now, whether he has learned from it and whether he is maturing now as an adult."

Bayern lament two errors, Guardiola proud

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola lamented their two late errors against Manchester City, which saw Sergio Aguero swoop in to steal the tie.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the final five minutes plus injury time, City were in desperate need of a hero at Eastlands - and familiar face Aguero was able to punish Bayern for being caught on the ball.

City forced turnovers for both goals, Aguero directly gaining possession from Bayern defender Jerome Boateng as the game ticked past 90 minutes before firing past Manuel Neuer to complete a hat-trick and breathe life into the club's knockout-stage hopes.

Guardiola said it was a lesson for his men, who had already sewed up top spot in Group E before their trip to Manchester.
"Even though we lost, I am very proud of my team," Guardiola said, as reported by UEFA.com.
"We played with 10 men for much of the game, despite that we continued to dominate possession and play an aggressive game.

"But that sort of thing happens in the Champions League, perhaps tonight is a big lesson for us.
"This is a group game, if it happens in the last 16 onwards then you are out of the competition."
Guardiola watched on as Mehdi Benatia's foul on Aguero inside 20 minutes saw City gain a numerical advantage, but his side fought back from a deficit to lead at half-time after a Xabi Alonso free-kick and a Robert Lewandowski header.

"We dominated, but we made two mistakes and that is why we lost," the Spaniard said.
"I'm sad for the players, they don't deserve this. Of course I have to congratulate City, they have the chance to go to the next stage.
"We will try to win against CSKA [in the final group game].

"This year I think we are better than we were last year because we have spent more time together.
"Last year we had short periods where we played good but not always. Now we know each other better."
Bayern defender Rafinha claimed fatigue was a factor in their two costly turnovers.

"It was a game we dominated for 75 minutes and then with individual mistakes we gave away two goals," the Brazilian said.
"At that stage we were tired, we had run a lot.

"We are pleased we played well but disappointed we lost. They were just two mistakes.
"The word is frustration, because we dominated the game even with a man less.
"We know we lost because of individual errors on our part, but we win and we lose as a group."

Silva disappointed by ´childish´ errors

Sporting Lisbon coach Marco Silva warned his team cannot afford to keep making mistakes following Tuesday's win over Maribor.

Silva's Sporting edged closer to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 thanks to a 3-1 win against Maribor in a Group G fixture that was delayed due to a power cut at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

The Portuguese hosts were on track for a routine victory thanks to goals from Carlos Mane and Nani before the 32-minute mark but a Jefferson own goal gave Maribor hope approaching half-time.
Islam Slimani eventually restored Sporting's two-goal lead in the 65th minute.
Sporting are in the box seat to advance to the last 16 with one matchday remaining after leapfrogging Schalke by two points, though Silva was not totally convinced by his team's display.

"Our focus is on the Champions League and we want to go through to the last 16," Silva told UEFA.com.
"Today only a victory mattered and we got that victory, justifiably.

"We did not start the second half well because we had had the game under control and conceded a childish goal near the interval, which allowed our opponents to regain confidence.
"We cannot keep making mistakes like that."
Silva, however, was pleased with loanee Nani, who jinked past three defenders and fired the ball beyond Maribor goalkeeper Jasmin Handanovic for Sporting's second goal of the game.

"We are collectively strong which makes individuals like Nani shine more often. Today he scored another great goal and we are happy for him," Silva added.
Nani - on loan from Premier League side Manchester United - has scored six goals since returning to Portugal, with four of those coming in the Champions League.

"Things are going well for me at the moment. I'm very involved in the matches and that's what I want - to contribute to the success of the team," said Nani.
The Portugal international winger added: "My goal was a lot of effort, dribbling past players and when I finally managed to score it was almost a relief.

"I celebrated like that because I have to think about the people I care about more, like my son, and I wanted to dedicate that goal to him."
Tuesday's defeat left Maribor at the foot of Group G, though the Slovenians have not given up hope of qualifying for the Europa League ahead of Schalke.

"We started the second half well, with a high tempo, but then we lost a bit of concentration which allowed Sporting to score the third and clinch it," said coach Ante Simundza.
"We are out of the Champions League now but we can still reach the Europa League and we will fight for it in our last match."

Olsson out until new year

West Brom defender Jonas Olsson will be out until the new year due to surgery on an Achilles injury.
The Swede has only featured five times for Alan Irvine's men in all competitions this term and is set to undergo the procedure in Portugal on Friday.

West Brom have estimated Olsson's recovery will take four to six weeks, but the 31-year-old believes action needed to be taken.

"I have been struggling with this on and off for some time and I've come to the point where it feels like surgery would help it," he told the club's official website.

"The recovery time is short, so I hope to be back 100 per cent some time after the New Year."
Meanwhile, Sebastien Pocognoli has returned to training following a hamstring problem.

Fabregas clears the air with Ramos

Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas has revealed he called Spain team-mate Sergio Ramos to discuss apparent recent criticism from the defender.
Fabregas and fellow Chelsea star Diego Costa pulled out of Spain's squad for matches against

Belarus and Germany earlier this month, citing injuries.
The duo appeared to be at the forefront of Ramos' mind when the Real Madrid player subsequently questioned the commitment of certain players to the national cause.

And Fabregas has now confirmed he spoke to Ramos, having been offended by the suggestion he is not fully dedicated to helping Spain prosper.

In an interview with radio station Cadena COPE, Fabregas said: "I felt that I was the one being alluded to and I already told Sergio what I thought.

"We spoke by telephone and everything is fine. It's all cleared up.
"I have made 94 appearances for Spain and for nine years I have always come, always. There have been a lot of matches and training camps I have turned up for without playing.

"I told him [Ramos] we have been playing together since the under-21s and there is no need to send messages in the media.
"I said 'You do not need to talk in the press, you can call me'."

Cavani urges Ligue 1 focus

Striker Edinson Cavani says Paris Saint-Germain must re-focus on Ligue 1 rather than their UEFA Champions League clash with Barcelona.
The French champions defeated Ajax 3-1 on Tuesday to set up a Group F decider with Barca in a fortnight's time.

A more favourable draw will likely greet the group winners in the last 16, but Cavani believes overtaking Marseille at the top of Ligue 1 must now take priority.

"There is plenty of time until the match in Barcelona, so we need to focus on Ligue 1, which is a big goal for us too," he said. "When the match against Barcelona arrives, we will look for an important victory for us.

"The most important thing was the victory and we are just at one step away from going through as group winners.
"We have to be focused on Ligue 1 [for now]."
PSG face Nice, Lille and Nantes before travelling to Camp Nou on December 10.

Giggs open to United exit to further career

Ryan Giggs says he is open to the possibility of leaving Manchester United in order to further his coaching career.
The Welshman has become synonymous with the club since making his debut in 1991, and is the club's record appearance maker with 963.

Following the departure of David Moyes towards the end of last season, Giggs took over in a caretaker role for four matches, winning two with one defeat and one draw.

The 40-year-old retired from playing at the conclusion of that campaign, and is now assistant coach to Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.

Many believe Giggs is being groomed as Van Gaal's successor to the post, but the man himself is not ruling out the possibility of cutting his managerial teeth elsewhere.

"I've been at the club for so long that I'm familiar with the club but if I want to further my coaching career or managing career and if it's not at Manchester United then so be it but I'll just have to wait and see," Giggs told Sky Sports.

Focusing on the present, Giggs believes Van Gaal is the right fit for United, as the Dutchman looks to return the club to a top-four place after they ended 2013-14 in seventh, missing out on European qualification altogether.

"He obviously demands a lot, he's somebody who's got plenty of experience, likes to play attacking football, likes to give youth a chance so there's plenty of synergy there with the history of Manchester United and the traditions so it's great to learn from somebody who's managed at the top for so long and just try to learn as I go and try to prove myself as a coach," said Giggs.

"It's an apprenticeship, it's starting all over again. It's a totally different mindset from being the one being spoken to, to actually giving out the instructions, delivering training sessions and doing things throughout the week to prepare for the game."

Brazil to meet Colombia at Copa America

Brazil will face Colombia in the 2015 Copa America group stages as Chile got a favourable draw on Monday.

Dunga's Brazil, who will be looking to atone for their poor 2014 World Cup, meet Colombia, Peru and Venezuela in Group C.

June 17 marks the clash between Brazil and Colombia in a repeat of their quarter-final at the World Cup.

Brazil won that clash 2-1, but it was Juan Camilo Zuniga's challenge on Neymar that caused controversy and left the Brazil star with a fractured vertebra.
Both Brazil and Colombia, ranked in the world's top 10, will be expected to progress from the group stages.

Peru and Venezuela are ranked 54th and 85th respectively.
Group B also pits two powerhouses against one another, with Argentina and 2011 champions Uruguay set to do battle.

That match will be played in La Serena on June 16.
Paraguay and Jamaica, the latter were invited, are also in the group.
Tournament hosts Chile were given a good draw in Group A, which includes Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia.

Jorge Sampaoli's men open the event with a clash against Ecuador in Santiago on June 11.
Mexico coach Miguel Herrera, whose team were also invited, had wanted to avoid Chile but got no such luck.
Group winners and runners-up will progress, as will the two best third-placed teams.

Guardiola: Desperate City are dangerous

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola said Manchester City's poor UEFA Champions League predicament is their greatest asset.
The two powerhouse clubs go head-to-head at Eastlands on Tuesday, with Bayern in no need of points having already secured top spot in Group E with maximum points from four matches.
City, conversely, have just two points in their European campaign, and desperately require a win over Guardiola's men to have their fate in their own hands heading to the final matchday.

Guardiola said he believes Manuel Pellegrini's dire predicament - compounded by suspensions to Yaya Toure and Fernandinho, an injury to David Silva and a fitness query on Sergio Aguero - will bandy City's squad together.

"To play football we need tension, we need something to fight for, you have to be a little bit afraid to play football, and from that point of view Manchester City has a bit of an advantage," the Spaniard said.
"The game tomorrow is more important for them than for us, but we must always find something to motivate us and be competitive.

"I think the best way to do that is our ides, how to play, tactics, we have to beat them tactically, with our movement and spirit and defend the name of our club.
"We can't be here for fun, we have to come here to play with our best performance to win three points which is very important for the club."

Guardiola's men have an imposing record of late, losing just once - the German Super Cup final to Borussia Dortmund - since their exit from last season's Champions League to eventual champions Real Madrid.

They have gone 18 competitive matches without defeat, including winning 11 of their past 12 - and conceding only six goals in their unbeaten run.
Midfielder Xabi Alonso hailed City's squad as one of the elite in the competition, despite their weakened status heading into Tuesday's clash.

"Obviously City are in a difficult position but they have shown during the last three years they have won the Premier League a couple of times," Alonso said.
"I'm pretty sure that this season they want to show their level and they want to go through that's why tomorrow is a key game for them.

"They have great players, of course tomorrow they will have important players suspended but as a whole team, it's one of the best squads in Europe for sure."

Time for City to produce - Nasri

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri told his team-mates the time had come for them to deliver in the UEFA Champions League.
Manuel Pellegrini's men are bottom of Group E, two points adrift of second-placed Roma, ahead of Tuesday's clash against Bayern Munich.

Despite two Premier League titles in the past three seasons, City have only reached the knockout stages of Europe's premier club competition once in that time.
Nasri said there would be no more excuses for City, who need a win at home against Bayern.

"Let's be honest, with the salary of every player and the level of those players, 90 per cent of the team is world class, then not to qualify from the first round of the Champions League would be a huge blow for the club - and for us as well," the Frenchman said.

"The thing in the Champions League is not just the talent, it's not being a team, it's the experience as well.
"We need to show we are smart players and to use what happened in the last couple of years to improve. We still have a chance and we need to take it. Now is the moment."
City have suffered losses to Bayern and CSKA Moscow, who they have also drawn with along with grabbing a point against Roma.

Nasri said his side were fortunate to still have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
"We are really lucky," he said.
"Normally, we'd be out, but we still have a chance. This is our chance, we have to take it. We have to play with nothing to lose.

"We need a big reaction, we need to improve. A team like us cannot go out in the first round of the Champions League. We have to win. Hopefully the fans will respond and be there for us as well."

Sampaoli relaxed after Copa America draw

Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli feels relaxed and is looking forward to next year's Copa America after Monday's draw.

Sampaoli's side are the hosts of the 2015 edition of South American football's most prestigious event, and will take on Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia in Group A on home soil.
As hosts, Chile - who have never won the Copa America - will get the competition under way against Ecuador in Santiago on June 11.

And although the tournament is still over six months away, Sampaoli is already plotting how his team can better their performance of getting to the last eight four years ago.

"The group has been decided and now we know who we'll be playing against," said the Argentinian after the draw in Vina del Mar.
"Any opponent would have been difficult as it stands. What makes us relaxed is that we better know now how to prepare for our rivals and start understanding every feature of their game and the systems they will use."

When asked if Chile can finally land their maiden Copa America title next year, Sampaoli replied: "I think it will be very difficult because there are very good national teams in the competition, but we will try to do well."

Sampaoli's Mexican counterpart Miguel Herrera, meanwhile, was satisfied with the outcome of the draw, although he still expects a tough test.
"The truth is, we have difficult games but it is not an impossible group for us to qualify from," he said.
"[But] as I said, the Copa America will always be close - every team is well prepared."

Arsenal must be ruthless - Arteta

Mikel Arteta knows Arsenal must be more ruthless after a defeat to Manchester United that the midfielder described as "not fair".

United were 2-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium to move above Arsene Wenger's side in the Premier League table on Saturday.

Arsenal lost by the same scoreline at Swansea City before the international break and are down in eighth place after the first 12 top-flight games.

Captain Arteta felt the defeat was harsh on Arsene Wenger's side, but realises they must make the most of their dominance in matches if they are to challenge for honours.

"I'm shocked," said the former Everton man. "I think we played our best game this season in terms of what we demand of ourselves – the quality in the way we attacked, how we won the ball back, how consistent we were throughout, the amount of chances we created.

"When you are in the box and you can't manage to score in that many situations, you can't expect to win.

"It’s not fair for the players and the fans. How can I explain the result? I can't.
"I am shocked and frustrated because we did not deserve this result considering the opposition we were playing against.

"I can only put it down to bad luck on the first goal which totally changed the game, at a time when we were absolutely controlling and hammering United.

"After they took the lead we had to take more risks to try to get back into the game and United have the players up front to cause you problems at any time.

"But I feel so sorry for the lads and for our supporters because they were terrific and I don't think we deserved this result."

He added: It’s [a lack of] ruthlessness, for sure. When you are in the box and you can't manage to score in that many situations, you can't expect to win."

Ter Stegen waiting for Barcelona chance

Marc-Andre ter Stegen admits a lack of first-team football at Barcelona has been tough to deal with, but remains confident in his ability.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper made a close-season move from Borussia Monchengladbach to the Catalan giants and was seen as the long-term heir to Victor Valdes' throne.

However, while Ter Stegen has started in the UEFA Champions League, he has yet to feature in La Liga, with Claudio Bravo preferred by coach Luis Enrique.

He admits life at Camp Nou has been difficult to adapt to, but he is prepared to wait for his opportunity.
"My current situation is not easy for me," he told Kicker.

"I have to be patient, though. I am doing my utmost to prove myself on the training pitch and make things hard for the coach.

"I have put in some good performances, but people always remember the bad moments. Mistakes are only human, though. Manuel Neuer, Iker Casillas and Roman Weidenfeller also make mistakes.

"I don't have any doubts [of my ability]. I have nothing to prove. I believe that especially people at Barca know that.

"It has been a big step for me, to a very big club. Sometimes you have to exercise patience."
Ter Stegen is expected to make his fifth appearance for Barca against APOEL on Tuesday.

Ancelotti reveals contract talks

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed discussions over a new contract at Real Madrid are under way.

The Italian arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of last season and ended Real's long wait for a 10th UEFA Champions League title by overcoming city rivals Atletico in Lisbon in May.

Former Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss Ancelotti also won the Copa del Rey in his first season in the Spanish capital.

Real are currently in a scintillating run of form having won 14 games in a row in all competitions, and sit top of La Liga while also being through to the last 16 of the Champions League.
And although Ancelotti's existing Real contract runs until 2016, he has already begun talks over extending his stay.

"I hope not to [just] be remembered because of La Decima," he told La Repubblica. "My contract ends in 2016 and we're already talking about an extension."

Since leaving Milan in 2009, Ancelotti has managed in England, France and Spain, and admits that only a return to San Siro would tempt him back to Serie A in the future.

"If sooner or later I was to return to Italy, it would only be to Milan," the 55-year-old added.

"The league has little charm, it does not attract the champions [best players]. The stadiums and infrastructure are the main problem.
"It is worrying. All countries are making progress, but we [Italy] are static."

Aguero and Jovetic fit to face Bayern

Manuel Pellegrini allayed concerns over the fitness of Sergio Aguero and Stevan Jovetic ahead of Manchester City's clash with Bayern Munich.
The strike duo missed training on Monday to spark talk that they could miss Tuesday's crunch clash with Bayern in UEFA Champions League Group E.

But when asked about the absence of Aguero and Jovetic, City boss Pellegrini said in a press conference: "Both of them are in the squad list."

That will come as a huge relief to City fans with Edin Dzeko sidelined with a calf injury and teenager Jose Angel Pozo the only other striker in Pellegrini's squad.

The Premier League champions will also be without David Silva and Aleksandar Kolarov due to knee and calf injuries respectively, while Yaya Toure and Fernandinho are suspended for the crucial encounter with Pep Guardiola's men.

City's chances of progressing to the last 16 look slim as they sit bottom of Group E with only two points ahead of their final two matches against Bayern and Roma.

They must win or hope the clash between Roma and CSKA ends in a draw to have any chance of staying in the competition - and Pellegrini has not given up hope of securing second spot.
He added: "It is important for this club to do well in Europe. Tomorrow the team will fight to the end to continue in the Champions League.

"If we don't qualify we will analyse [why they failed to do so]. But we must play the game tomorrow and against Roma before drawing conclusions."

City were beaten by a late Jerome Boateng strike at the Allianz Arena in September, but Pellegrini is not dwelling on that defeat.
He said: "We were unlucky to lose in the last few minutes. But what happened in the past doesn't matter."

Inzaghi sorry for derby stalemate

A disappointed Filippo Inzaghi lamented his Milan side's failure to beat Inter after the 1-1 derby draw on Sunday.
Jeremy Menez had given Milan the lead midway through the first half, but Joel Obi levelled for Inter just after the hour-mark.

Inzaghi said he expected a tough contest, particularly with the clash marking Roberto Mancini's first game back in charge of Inter.
But the 41-year-old felt his team had enough chances to claim all three points.

"It was an even match and we knew it would have been hard with the change of coach," Inzaghi told Milan Channel.
"I'm sorry for the fans, they helped us make the difference, we would have liked to have given them a win.

"[Goalkeeper] Diego Lopez was only made to work by [Mauro] Icardi by a misplaced pass by us and very little else.
"We conceded through a goal after two deflections and we finished the game with four successive corners and two chances through [Stephan] El Shaarawy and [Andrea] Poli.

"I'm disappointed but we have to move forwards. It was an excellent performance by the defenders, they were helped by the whole side."
Inzaghi, whose team are seventh, explained his decision to leave Giampaolo Pazzini on the bench.
He said he was about to introduce the 30-year-old, but felt El Shaarawy was just beginning to cause problems.

"I was about to bring Pazzini on, but then there was that chance by El Shaarawy," Inzaghi said.
"If I had taken him off he would have become even more discouraged, by scoring he would have been reinvigorated.

"But Pazzini has to stay calm, there's already the chance to play as of Sunday. I really liked this playing system a lot, when we have all the players available, we have a competitive squad."

Mancini ´very happy´ with derby draw

Inter coach Roberto Mancini was happy with his team's performance in their 1-1 derby draw against Milan on Sunday.

Mancini's first game back in charge of Inter saw Joel Obi score a second-half equaliser after Jeremy Menez's goal midway through the first half.
Given the limited preparation under his coaching, Mancini was pleased with the display put on by his team.

"Derbies are always difficult and that was the case today," he said.
"I'm very happy with how the team played, we changed a system that had been used for the last 18 months and it was never going to be easy. I'm happy, they all played well.

"I didn't think I'd revolutionise things in five days, it's only natural you have a few issues at the start. We're a long way off third place but it's too soon to be looking at the table.
"Our aim is to win as many games as possible even though we're not 100 per cent."

Inter sit ninth in Serie A after managing to win just four of their opening 12 league matches, but they are only five points adrift of third-placed Napoli.
Mancini said he understood his team would initially struggle with a change of tactics, but believes they will be suited to playing four at the back.

"We had some understandable difficulties with the three up front," he said.
"They had to work hard defensively and they still need to improve their movement but we can move forward through hard work.

"It might take some time to master a back four but we have players in the squad who play that system with their national teams. We definitely have to improve."

Iniesta, Vermaelen unavailable for Cyprus trip

Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta remains sidelined by injury, while Thomas Vermaelen's club debut was further postponed on Sunday.
The pair were the only two rendered unavailable for Barca's UEFA Champions League clash at APOEL Nicosia on Tuesday.

Iniesta, 30, picked up a calf strain in the El Clasico against Real Madrid in October, and remains out of contention for Luis Enrique's side.

Belgian defender Vermaelen, meanwhile, has battled hamstring, knee and calf problems already in 2014, and the former Arsenal man's woes continued on Sunday as Barca revealed another hamstring injury.

Vermaelen has not featured at club level since coming on late in Arsenal's 1-0 win over West Brom in the Premier League in May.

"That means no places for Andres Iniesta, who has yet to be declared fully fit, or for Thomas Vermaelen," a club statement read, after Barca named a 22-man squad.

"The Club Medical Services have said that the player [Vermaelen] has a right hamstring injury."
Barca are already assured of their last-16 spot in Europe with two games to play, but remain one point behind Group F leaders PSG.

Martinez: Lukaku can become ´best striker in the world´

Everton manager Roberto Martinez heaped praise on striker Romelu Lukaku, claiming he has the ability to become the "best in the world".

After making a slow start to the 2014-15 Premier League season, Lukaku has returned to the form that saw Martinez spend a club-record £28million to make the Belgium international's stay at Goodison Park permanent.

Lukaku scored the opening goal in Everton's 2-1 victory over West Ham United on Saturday.
The former Chelsea front man has now found the back of the net in three of his past five Premier League fixtures and Martinez believes the 21-year-old has the potential to be the best striker in the world.

"Remember that the assessment of Rom is what he brings to the side. Nobody else in our squad can give us what he gives us," said Martinez.

"He is someone that holds up the ball and brings a lot of fear to the opposition because they always get players around him which opens space at all times. He's got power, he's got pace, he's a clinical footballer driving the ball - I've been delighted with Rom.

"The reality as well is that after the World Cup it's been difficult for him to get his best physical level and we need to help him towards that but I've been delighted with what he's done, although I still know he has loads to do because his potential is immense.

"I think he's doing exactly what the team needs. He's such a winner that he wants to become the best striker in the world and he's got the potential to do that."

Real Madrid heading to Australia for ICC

Real Madrid are heading to Melbourne, with confirmation on Monday they will play in the International Champions Cup at the MCG in July 2015.
Victorian sports minister Damian Drum revealed global superstars like FIFA Ballon d'Or winner

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, James Rodriguez and Spanish internationals Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos will head to Australia for the pre-season tournament in 2015.

Two further teams to take part are yet to be announced but one will be from the Premier League, with the other from the Serie A.

It is understood Manchester City and Inter are the other two clubs likely to join Real for the tournament, with an announcement set for the coming weeks.

The ICC will consist of three matches, all at the MCG, on July 18, 21 and 24 next year, with Drum revealing the event would generate around 50 million Australian dollars for the local economy.

Ex-Socceroos striker John Aloisi, who spent a large chunk of his career in Spain, was at the announcement and said having Real Madrid in Melbourne will be an incredible occasion.

"I got to play in Spain for six years and experience how big Real Madrid were," the former Osasuna and Alaves attacker said.

"They buy the biggest players in the world and make it work. Watching them live is another experience. I can't wait."

Torres wants to be Milan top scorer

Milan striker Fernando Torres has set his sights on ending the season as top scorer, despite having scored just one Serie A goal so far.

The Spain international has not lived up to expectations since arriving at San Siro from Chelsea on loan in August, with his only goal in nine league appearances coming in a 2-2 draw at Empoli in September.

However, Torres - six goals short of current Milan top scorer Keisuke Honda - has vowed to make a bigger contribution and has no concerns over the number of goalscoring chances being created by the team.

"If a game ends goalless, but we've created five chances, that's a good sign," he is quoted as telling Gazzetta dello Sport.
"There have only been a few games where we've created less than we should have. That's a problem.

"However, it's now up to us, the forwards. Honda can't always score.
"My goal is still to be top scorer. Milan brought me here to score and take advantage of chances, it's my job.

"If I don't do that I belong somewhere else.
"Having said that, scoring a goal isn't an obsession. If I see a team-mate in a better position I will pass it to them.

"Here at Milan we have to restart, but I know from experience you can't rush these things.
"Getting back into Europe is the main goal of course, but we mustn't become too anxious about it."
Milan currently sit seventh in Serie A and face city rivals Inter on Sunday.

Monk: Swansea will not recall Michu

Swansea City manager Garry Monk is not considering recalling Michu when Wilfred Bony departs for the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
Monk could be without leading Ivorian marksman Bony for up to six matches once the showpiece African tournament - to be held in Equatorial Guinea - gets underway in the New Year.

Bony's absence has led to speculation that Michu - on loan at Serie A outfit Napoli - could return to Wales to fill the void.

But Monk was quick to dismiss the Spaniard's possible return when quizzed by reporters, instead claiming he could delve into the transfer market.

"Michu is on loan at Napoli for the season," Monk said. "I'm not even thinking about that, I've not even checked the details of the loan.

"Obviously Ivory Coast's qualification dictates what you do in terms of January. We may have to go into the loan market or do something to cover it.

"We've already been looking at all the positions but now Bony has qualified a striker is the position we do now have to cover.

"We could promote from within, but it is likely to be a loan. It might be a loan with a view to a permanent or to next season, or just for a month."
Swansea travel to defending Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday.

Everton will not rush Stones - Martinez

Everton manager Roberto Martinez insists John Stones will not be rushed back from injury, with the defender set for a January return.
Stones is on the road to recovery after undergoing surgery for ankle ligament damage sustained in Everton's 2-1 loss at Manchester United last month.

The 20-year-old English centre-back is progressing well and there are some suggestions that he may return ahead of schedule, but Martinez dismissed talk of a comeback before the New Year.

"The surgeon and the specialist have been very, very pleased. I think they've been quite surprised how quickly he is recovering," said the Spaniard.

"We need to be careful, though. The second half of the season is going to be really demanding and we want John to be fully fit and ready to cope with that.

"What we don't want is for him to come back for one game and then get in a position where his ankle isn't fully recovered and he needs more recovery time.

"He's doing well, though. He's walking around [Everton's training base] Finch Farm with no protection. He's ready to step up his individual programme and it's exciting for the turn of the year to see when he'll be ready.

"We don't know the date at the moment but I'd say sometime in January he'll be able to join the group which is incredible news."

Messi happy at Barcelona - Bartomeu

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu claims he has assurances from Lionel Messi's father that he is happy at the club.

Argentina captain Messi was coy over his future during an interview with newspaper Ole in his homeland this week, stating his desire to remain at Barca before adding that "things don't always work out as you want them to".

However, Messi agreed a new contract earlier this year and Bartomeu insists the 27-year-old has no desire to depart Camp Nou anytime soon.

"Leo is happy at our club, his father has told me, even if he is subjected to great pressure off the pitch," he is quoted as telling 8TV. "[But] he has not asked us a for a further contract renewal.

"He is happy. At the club we always help the player - [Former Barca coach Pep] Guardiola said the same a few years ago.
"Leo is happy at Barca."

Poyet targeting cover for Van Aanholt

Sunderland head coach Gus Poyet believes he may have to dip into the transfer market in January to cover the injury to Patrick van Aanholt.

Van Aanholt joined Sunderland on a four-year deal from Chelsea back in July and started every Premier League game for his new club until he dislocated his shoulder in the 3-1 win over Crystal Palace earlier this month.

It has since been announced that the left-back will be out for around two-and-a-half months, prompting Poyet into thinking about bringing in a replacement, should there be any complications with the Dutchman's recovery.

"I met [sporting director] Lee [Congerton] again to define a few things," he said.
"And let's say it [left-back] is a position that needs to be on standby.

"We need to have an option, just in case something doesn't work and Patrick's recovery has a setback.
"It all depends on how he recovers.

"If he doesn't have any setbacks, it's going to be the middle of January before he is training again.
"But he is a fit lad and, once the healing after the operation is finished, the speed of the recovery is up to him. We'll see.

"It's a big blow to have lost Patrick. There are not many left-footed left-backs in the world - and it is very difficult to find one that is available at this level.

"He was getting used to what we wanted because we were working him hard every day!
"So it's a step back. We have to cope with the situation."

Walcott out of United clash, Welbeck a doubt

Arsenal will be without Theo Walcott for their Premier League clash with Manchester United, while Danny Welbeck is a doubt.

Walcott suffered a serious knee problem in an FA Cup game with Tottenham back in January, and has made just two substitute appearances this season as Arsene Wenger aims to gradually reintroduce him to first-team action.

On Thursday, Wenger suggested Walcott was fit for Saturday's meeting at the Emirates Stadium, but in his press conference on Friday, the manager declared otherwise.

"I don't think he will be available tomorrow," he said.
There was good news for Arsenal in the shape of Olivier Giroud's return to fitness after recovering from a broken leg, although Wenger revealed former United man Welbeck was a slight doubt with a hamstring complaint.

"His fitness will depend on the medical assessment in the morning," he said.
Talk of Welbeck has dominated the build-up to Saturday's game, with the 23-year-old departing Old

Trafford at the end of the transfer window in order to secure first-team action.
United boss Louis van Gaal insists he has not been surprised by Welbeck's form since joining Arsenal, and Wenger is full of praise for the forward.

"Louis van Gaal didn't have him under his command for very long, so it's difficult to judge players," he said.

"Welbeck is still a young player. I can understand Van Gaal completely. What's important is that he gets an opportunity.

"In front of him, he had two great goalscorers in Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. What he needed was a chance.

"I always respected him and he has a great future. But he's gained more respect over the last few months.
"One reason we bought him was because he wanted to play. Playing centrally wasn't a condition."

No January transfers for Real, says Ancelotti

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti insists that they will not be dipping into the transfer market to replace injured midfielder Luka Modric.
Modric has been ruled out for three months after suffering a torn thigh muscle in Croatia's Euro 2016 qualifier with Italy.

However, Ancelotti is adamant Real have the resources to cope with the setback and are not in need of January reinforcements.

"No [Real will not be buying in January], because we are able to replace Modric," Ancelotti told Radio Nacional de Espana.

"We have other important players for this type of situation.
"Last year we had the same problem with the injury to [Sami] Khedira. We'll fix it by putting in another midfielder.

"We have the option of replacing him with Khedira, [Asier] Illarramendi and finally, we have the option of Isco, who does not have the habit of playing in the position but I think he can do it in some games.

"We have [Alvaro] Medran, a youngster from the Castilla who is doing very well and we like him. He may be an option at least to be with us."
Leaders Real return to La Liga action on Saturday when they visit Eibar.

Lahm undergoes successful ankle surgery

Bayern Munich have confirmed that captain Philipp Lahm has undergone a successful operation on his fractured ankle.
Lahm sustained the injury in a training session on Tuesday, the 31-year-old World Cup winner collapsing to the ground unchallenged.

The Bavarian club duly revealed that Lahm was facing a three-month lay-off.
And the versatile former Germany captain, who can operate as either a defensive midfielder or a full-back, has now gone under the knife.

Bayern posted on their official Twitter account: "Philipp #Lahm's operation was a success. Ankle held in place with metal plate and screws. Several weeks rest and then he begins rehab."

Lahm has featured in 18 matches for Bayern this season.
Pep Guardiola's men resume Bundesliga action on Saturday with a home game against Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena.

Martinez dismisses Keane ´nonsense´

Roberto Martinez has dismissed the "nonsense" that surrounded Roy Keane's comments about Everton's Republic of Ireland stars this week.

The Ireland assistant suggested the Merseyside club had placed pressure on Seamus Coleman and James McCarthy to make themselves unavailable for the national team.

Neither featured in last month's fixtures with Gibraltar and Germany, but both played in Everton's subsequent 3-0 Premier League win over Aston Villa after that international break.

Midfielder McCarthy also sat out last Friday's 1-0 loss to Scotland with a hamstring complaint, while he and Coleman each missed a friendly clash with the United States on Tuesday.
Everton chairman Bill Kenwright rubbished Keane's claims at the time and Martinez has now made his feelings clear.

"We've got a good relationship with the [Republic of Ireland] manager Martin O'Neill and we keep in touch quite frequently and share information," he stressed. "That's something that, at the club, we're always very proud when our players represent their countries.

"It's something that we're very, very proud of and every player at our club is desperately proud to represent their country.
"A lot has been said. A lot has been nonsense. The reality is that the conversations between the managers of the associations and ourselves as a club have always been really good and they'll carry on being good.

"The only thing I care about is the players. We produced four players for the Republic of Ireland [Coleman, McCarthy, Darron Gibson and Aiden McGeady]... four players who love to play for their country.

"It's disappointing when you see some sort of news in the media that they could put that in doubt. That's the disappointing aspect.
"All the fans of the Republic of Ireland and any nation need to know that these players would give their lives to represent their countries."

Redknapp: Austin can be great like Ferdinand

QPR manager Harry Redknapp has backed Charlie Austin to be "one of the great strikers in English football" - likening him to Les Ferdinand.
The 25-year-old has scored six goals in 10 Premier League appearances for the Loftus Road club, who currently sit one place off the foot of the table.

Austin has been tipped for a call-up to Roy Hodgson's England squad in recent weeks and Redknapp believes the forward has the qualities to replicate the achievements of QPR legend Ferdinand.

"Charlie's played a handful of games now in the Premier League, but he's got to keep performing and scoring goals," he said. "We'd all love to see him in the England squad.

"I see a real spring in Charlie's step now he has scored against some top sides in the Premier League.
"If Charlie ends up being as good as Les Ferdinand, then we'll have one of the great strikers in English football."

Despite QPR's lowly league position, Redknapp is confident his side can make the necessary improvements to haul themselves out of trouble.

"We've had four good performances in a row now, which is good," he continued.
"It's taken a bit of time but I'm happy with the way we are playing and we keep improving."
Responding to the club's £20,000 fine over a misconduct charge for the reaction to a disallowed

Austin goal against Manchester City a fortnight ago, Redknapp added: "I think that's a harsh fine.
"I don't think our players were overzealous in their appeals."
QPR visit Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday.

Moreno targets attacking contribution

Liverpool full-back Alberto Moreno has set his sights on playing a greater attacking role for the Merseyside club.

The 22-year-old Spaniard has scored one goal in nine Premier League appearances since joining from Sevilla in August, with Liverpool sitting 11th in the English top flight.

However, Moreno wants to make more of a contribution in the final third of the pitch, and is aiming to call on the experience of his early days as a winger.

"All players love to score goals, especially me, because when I was younger I used to score regularly as I played further forward back then," he told the club's official website.

"When I was a kid I played more as a winger or a wide attacking midfielder - not as a full-back. But I always like to score goals and above all, provide assists, which is what an attacking full-back has to do.

"As we stand, I'm on one goal and an assist in 12 games [in all competitions], so I think I'm aiming at getting more than five goals and five assists."

However, Moreno is well aware that his defensive responsibilities are equally important.
Asked which area of his game could be improved, he added: "Maybe defensively. I'm a very attack-minded full-back.

"I'm also very young and I've still got a lot to learn. Playing with these players, I'm bound to learn and also playing in this highly competitive league I'm going to learn a lot also."

Spain are in transition, says Del Bosque

Vicente del Bosque has conceded that Spain are a team in transition following their 1-0 friendly loss to Germany on Tuesday.
Spain fell to their first home defeat under Del Bosque as Toni Kroos' 89th-minute strike gave the world champions victory in Vigo.

The result marked Spain's third loss in six games since their group-stage exit at the World Cup.
Del Bosque was understandably disappointed with the result, but the 63-year-old is more focused on building a side to challenge for future honours.

"We are in a period of transition and we want to continue looking to the future with optimism, but we are not entirely happy with the outcome," Del Bosque said.

Although Del Bosque admits the deposed world champions are rebuilding, he was pleased with the overall performance of his side.
He added: "I agree with the assessment that it was an even, balanced game, and we showed that we could out-play them, but we must praise Kroos' goal."
Spain resume competitive action in a Euro 2016 qualifier with Ukraine in March.

Di Maria, Martino play down injury fears

Angel di Maria moved to calm fears over an injury he sustained to his foot in Argentina's 1-0 defeat to Portugal on Tuesday.

The World Cup runners-up went down to Raphael Guerreiro's stoppage-time header in a friendly at Old Trafford, despite having had the better openings throughout.
Lionel Messi hit the post early on, while Di Maria also went close in what was a low-key affair in Manchester.

Di Maria took a heavy blow to the foot in a challenge with Nani during the first half, but was able to continue until being replaced shortly after the hour mark by Erik Lamela.

Despite the injury, the Manchester United man was hopeful of being able to feature in Saturday's Premier League clash at Arsenal.

"It was just a blow," he said. "I hope it doesn't swell any more so I can play at the weekend."
Coach Gerardo Martino added: "We don't think it's anything serious, it was quite a tough blow he took.

"It was a tough knock. It cut the skin a little bit. But we have had a look at it and we are evaluating the situation.

"We are having a look at some X-rays, some images that have been taken but in spite of that we don't think it is too serious."

On the game itself, Martino felt his side had done enough to secure victory before Guerreiro's late winner.
"We've done all the merits to win, we had the best scoring chances," he said.

"The result changes the mood, but it was a very good match for Argentina. In the different facets of the game in which we want to have supremacy over the rival, we have done so."

The pre-match build up was dominated by talk of a meeting between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but both men were substituted at half-time.

"On the change of Cristiano we had no idea," Martino said. "About Messi what we had agreed upon, we had talked about it because he had played throughout the game against Croatia."

Varane pride after captain´s contribution

France defender Raphael Varane reflected on a dream night after he secured a 1-0 friendly win over Sweden in Marseille.

The Real Madrid player took the captain's armband as regular national skipper Hugo Lloris sat out Tuesday's match at the Stade Velodrome.

Didier Deschamps' team dominated for the majority of the contest, but looked set to be frustrated before Varane headed home Antoine Griezmann's 84th-minute corner.

France have lost just once in 2014 - their FIFA World Cup exit at the hands of winners Germany standing as the only defeat in the calendar year - and Varane is happy to see similar standards developing to the ones he enjoys at club level.

"I am taking advantage of this moment to the maximum," he told reporters.
"To be captain, it is the cherry on top of the cake, but what matters is the team.

"The aim is to win continuously with Real Madrid.
"I am very happy to finish the calendar year on a good note."
Varane's Real team-mate Karim Benzema had an opportunity to give France late breathing space, but sent a penalty sailing over the bar after Oscar Wendt's handball.

"On the penalty, I wanted to hit the ball hard. I am disappointed but what is important is the win," Benzema told reporters.

"The better we are on the pitch, the more that the fans will support us.
"I would have liked to score this penalty. I need to work on them in training."

I chose to give Silva armband - Neymar

Brazil star Neymar said he chose to give Thiago Silva the captain's armband because the defender is an important leader.
Controversy has surrounded coach Dunga's decision to strip Silva of the captaincy and have Neymar leading his team.

As he was being substituted late in Brazil's 2-1 win over Austria in Vienna on Tuesday, Neymar handed the armband to Silva.

The Barcelona star said: "I didn't think about who I would give the captain's armband.
"I decided in the moment like everybody does. Sometimes that choice is luck, sometimes by the leadership on the field and this time I chose Thiago Silva.

"It was not about what happened. It's because he was wearing the captain's armband before, he's a leader in the field and that's important to us. That's why I chose him."

Roberto Firmino scored the winner for Brazil in the 83rd minute after Aleksandar Dragovic's penalty cancelled out David Luiz's opener.

Neymar said he was delighted for the 23-year-old Hoffenheim midfielder.
"It's great because Roberto Firmino's confidence grows up with this result," he said.

"He deserves it for what he's been doing in the training sessions, for his dedication. I congratulate him. He played a great match and helped us with this victory.

"It's really important to start like that in the Brazilian team, it's only his second match and he scored. That gives you a big satisfaction, playing for your country and scoring a goal."

More to Rooney than goals, says Hodgson

Roy Hodgson said there was more to Wayne Rooney's performance than his two goals in their 3-1 win over Scotland on Tuesday.

Rooney, in cap number 101, scored twice to move outright third on the all-time goals list for England, to make it a pair of 3-1 wins across the international break - Hodgson's men beating Slovenia by the same scoreline on Saturday.

Despite all the talk on Rooney's goals tally nearing the record - he is three behind all-time leader Bobby Charlton (49) - Hodgson said the Manchester United striker's overall contribution was more noteworthy.

"Today, everything will be about the two goals, but I thought there was an awful lot more to his play today than his two goals," Hodgson said.

"I thought there were a lot of other very positive points to his game, so I'd like to think that [he's going to continue at his peak], but I'm always very wary as a coach of trying to put too much responsibility on people.

"When they're doing well, and when they're shouldering responsibility, I'm delighted, but I'm always a bit wary that if I'm not careful my comments will push on even more responsibility.

"We've got to be a team, and we've got to share it out, and he certainly did terrifically tonight, but there were a few other players out there I think took a lot of responsibility too."
Hodgson did concede it was important for Rooney to continue to push towards the goals record, and also the games record - he is 24 shy of tying Peter Shilton's tally.

"If you ask me, I think they should be very important [breaking England records]," Hodgson said.
"I think milestones are important, I think records are important, and it must be nice for him to think that if he carries on this way, soon he'll see his name at the top of the list.

"And he's got also a record number of caps in his sight, but if he was to get them, he'd have to keep his fitness, keep his form, and keep playing for a few more years.

"But you know Wayne as well as I, and you know that he's not going to be the first one to retire from football. All the time he can get out there, he'll keep his end up."

Vidal backs Chile for Copa America success

Arturo Vidal believes Chile can "achieve something important" when they host next year's Copa America.

Having impressed many in reaching the last 16 at the World Cup earlier this year, Jorge Sampaoli's men will be keen to maintain their momentum at the 2015 event, which gets under way in June.

Chile, who have never previously won the Copa America, are unbeaten in five friendly fixtures since being eliminated on penalties by the hosts in Brazil, and Juventus midfielder Vidal has backed the national team to enjoy a successful campaign.

"Let's hope we can win the Copa America because it would be something special for the country," he said at the launch of Nike's Cachana matchball for the tournament.

"I believe Chile needs to triumph and this is a great opportunity to achieve something important."
Chile face Uruguay in a friendly on Tuesday.

Neymar has no problem with Thiago Silva

Neymar insists there is no issue between himself and Thiago Silva after a row over the Brazil captaincy erupted at the weekend.

Silva, 30, lost the captaincy following Brazil's embarrassing finish to their hosting of the World Cup, as they lost 7-1 to Germany in the semi-finals before a 3-0 rout in the third-place play-off at the hands of Netherlands.

Dunga was subsequently appointed Brazil coach for a second time, handing Neymar the armband and leaving the Paris Saint-Germain central defender's position in jeopardy.

Silva has not played for Brazil since the World Cup, but has stated his desire to earn a spot under the new boss, who has guided Brazil to five straight clean-sheet wins.

And Neymar revealed he has spoken with his international colleague to clarify the situation.
"We've talked," he said. "Sometimes when we say something it can be interpreted in another way, but this is a complicated situation.

"We have a hierarchy and the boss here is our coach and we know that what he said is what he said.
"Me and Thiago have nothing else, we are good friends and this will not hurt our friendship.

"We are two men and we know what is the best for us and for the group, but nothing have affected our friendship."

Dunga defends Silva decision

Brazil coach Dunga defended his decision to strip Thiago Silva of the captaincy and hand Neymar the armband.
Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Silva has returned to the squad after injury, but he remains without the captaincy.

Neymar has led Brazil since Dunga took over after the World Cup, and the coach said the Barcelona attacker had the characteristics of a leader.

"Each player has their own characteristics but a team's preparation begins in technical, physical and tactical aspects. Those ingredients will give you a mental support," Dunga told a news conference.

"The more we feel safe in those elements, the more we'll have confidence.

"The decision of who we call captain depends on each player's characteristics, there's some players that feel comfortable in their first day here and other ones take a little longer.

"There's some others that receive a special attention in their clubs but in the national team this attention is shared with the others.

"There's also players that only receive compliments in their clubs and when they arrive the Brazilian team they start to see their defects. The players have to be prepared for criticisms, you have to be well prepared for that."

Brazil are on a five-match winning run since their disappointing World Cup and Dunga's men face Austria on Tuesday.
Dunga is happy with his squad, despite being without his Brazil-based players.

"You all asked for renovation after the World Cup and now you have got it," he said.

"It's good to have experienced players to balance things but it's also good to have young players with adrenaline, motivation, fresh blood.

"In this trip I'm dealing with problems for the first time and my problems is that in the first matches I had 22 or 23 players but now that I can't call players from Brazil, so I have less options.

"There's new players having their opportunities and several young players with a chance to impress. The competition for places is good for Brazilian football."

Di Maria drought not a concern for Argentina boss Martino

Gerardo Martino said he is unconcerned by Angel di Maria's form, ahead of Argentina's friendly with Portugal at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The clash has centred on the head-to-head battle between superstar attackers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - back at his former home in Manchester - but it is the current United number seven Di Maria who will also have keen eyes watching him.

Di Maria has not scored in seven appearances - for club or country - after beginning his United stint with three goals in five Premier League outings.

The former Real Madrid attacker will want to break his run of outs with a goal at Old Trafford, but Martino claimed Di Maria has excuses for his lack of production in recent weeks.

"First and foremost, I'd just have to say that Angel is one of the very top players in world football," Martino said.

"When you're not an expert in the league he plays in, it's hard to make an opinion, but I'll try to talk to you about him.

"I think his start [at United] was exceptional, but I think generally when players go to a new club, and have to get used to a new league, a new team, a different style of football, new team-mates.

"I think the form that he's showing now is a bit more typical of a player going to a new club, in comparison to those very first few games where he burst onto the scene and did so, so well.

"I don't think anything is out of the ordinary with his current form."
Di Maria has been deployed on the left side of United's attack by Louis van Gaal, but Martino claimed it is not the only place the 26-year-old can be influential from.

"As regards whether his current position has any influence, I think that Angel is a player who can play in a number of different roles equally as well," the former Barcelona boss said.

"You only have to look at a few seasons back when he played on the right side for Real Madrid, and then the season just gone he featured more in an inside left slightly more free role, and obviously in the World Cup he did very well when he played wide left.

"I think he's the type of guy who can adapt to anywhere the manager asks him to play."

Title not yet ours - Courtois

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois insists the Premier League title race is still alive despite his team's dominance.
Jose Mourinho's men are four points clear at the top and are unbeaten through 11 league games this campaign.

But Courtois said it was far from over, expecting it to be "very difficult" despite the struggles of Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

"We don't have the title in the bag," he said.

"We are working game by game. The Premier League is very difficult.

"We are trying to win with every game that is possible. But there will be a still a long way to win the title. We are working hard. Hopefully that will be enough."

Third-placed City are eight points behind Chelsea, while Arsenal (12), United (13) and Liverpool (15) are even further adrift.

Gutman lauds Israel players, fans

Eli Gutman heaped praised on his players and said the Israeli fans were the "driving force" behind Sunday's win over Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Israel maintained their perfect start to Euro 2016 Group B qualifying with a comfortable 3-0 victory against 10-man Bosnia at the Sammy Ofer Stadium in Haifa.

Gil Vermouth broke the deadlock in the 36th minute after his shot took a deflection off Emir Spahic.
Omer Damari doubled the home side's lead on the stroke of half-time, sending a deft shot past Bosnia goalkeeper Asmir Begovic for his fifth goal of the qualifying campaign.

Bosnia defender Toni Sunjic was sent off three minutes after the break and Israel took full advantage, Eran Zehavi adding to his two assists with a goal of his own 20 minutes from time.

Israel top the Group B standings by one point after making it three wins from as many games and Gutman was understandably pleased, having easily accounted for the 2014 World Cup participants in front of a partisan crowd.

"We finally showed our strength when the chips were down," Gutman said afterwards.
"The crowd gave us the power – I don't remember an atmosphere like this for an international match.

That was all the players were talking about when they came in for half-time.
"We created so many opportunities, we played intelligently going forward.

"What more can I say? I'm proud of my boys. This is what I work for: high pressure and players that are close to each other."
Gutman added: "You saw a team that was very united. I bow before them, they were great and I'm proud to be their coach.
"I wish the next game was next week. This is a tough group and it was fantastic to win. When 30,000 fans sing the national anthem it makes you shiver, the crowd pushed us forward all the way."

Bosnia-Herzegovina were ´outplayed´ - Susic

Under-fire coach Safet Susic said Israel deserved to win after 10-man Bosnia-Herzegovina were outplayed in Euro 2016 qualifying on Sunday.

Bosnia were no match for Group B leaders Israel, losing 3-0 at the Sammy Ofer Stadium, as the Balkan nation left Haifa still searching for their first win in qualifying after four matches.

Susic's Bosnia trailed 2-0 at half-time following goals to Gil Vermouth and Omer Damari.

Bosnia were dealt a big blow three minutes into the second half, when defender Toni Sunjic saw red.
Israel completed the scoring 20 minutes from time through Eran Zehavi as Bosnia fell seven points off the pace with just two draws so far.

Susic congratulated the Israelis post-game for their superior performance, though he did concede Bosnia always faced up an uphill battle in the absence of strike duo Edin Dzeko and Vedad Ibisevic.

"I want to congratulate Israel for their deserved win, they beat us in every aspect in the first half and after the red card it was over," the 59-year-old said.

"We still have a chance. We didn't start the game the way we wanted. Israel were much better tonight and they deserved to win.

"Technically we didn't live up to our potential and that is what cost us. They outplayed us in midfield where we are strongest.

"I was convinced we would play well, but we were handicapped by Edin Dzeko and Vedad Ibisevic's absences.

"It was even harder in the second half, playing with 10 players."

´I was not cocky´ - Pogba

France midfielder Paul Pogba insists he was "not cocky" but learned his lessons from his team's 1-1 draw with Albania.
Pogba was beaten to a cross by Mergim Mavraj as Albania took a surprise lead in the friendly, but

Antoine Griezmann salvaged a draw for France in the second half.
The Juventus star said the encounter had taught him plenty.

"I would say it was a good lesson for me, it's true that I was on a roll, and the game against Albania taught me because you have to get down," Pogba said.

"I was not cocky but you never know.
"Against Albania, it was a tough game, the player I was defending on scored, it happens.

"Even to the best, they won't always play good games, and it's a good lesson for me. I know I didn't give my best, I could have done a lot more, it was a day like that.

"I learnt and I hope the next game I'll wake up and I'll give my best and we'll quickly forget this game against Albania."

Griezmann's good finish in the 73rd minute saw France extend their unbeaten run to five matches.
The Atletico Madrid man said he was enjoying his combination with striker Karim Benzema.

"I get along well with Karim off the pitch, we often hang together. And then on the pitch, it's easy to work with Karim, Paul [Pogba], Mathieu [Valbuena] and some other players," Griezmann said.

"We always try to find each other with... passes, I always try to put him in the best situation, and he does the same."

Kovac apologises for Croatian fans, rues missed chances

Croatia coach Niko Kovac apologised for the away fans' behaviour, after their 1-1 Euro 2016 qualifying draw with Italy in Milan on Sunday.

Flares were thrown from the Croatian contingent midway through the second half at San Siro, halting play for about 10 minutes.

The Croatians had the best chance to win after the restart, with Ivan Perisic dragging a shot just wide of the target with Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon stranded.

But Kovac was concerned by the behaviour of the visiting fans, who irked him once more.
"I feel I need to talk about the off-field incidents," Kovac said.

"I am very disappointed about our supporters' behaviour - something which had already happened in Switzerland in a previous match.

"That's why I wanted to say sorry to everyone for their behaviour and actions.

"I have already said sorry to those on the pitch, the referee and the Italian players but I wanted to do it again here.

"I am truly sorry for our fans' behaviour."

Kovac said his side were unfortunate not to take all three points and preserve their perfect qualifying campaign, as they remained level with Italy on 10 points in Group H.
"I think that we basically controlled the game for the full 90 minutes," Kovac said.

"Italy were good in defence but they still left some gaps behind and we had more chances than Italy at the end.

"I remember especially a good chance for Ivica Olic in the first half and then with Perisic in the second which would have given us the full three points.
"I am a bit disappointed because it feels like two points dropped for us."
